Just two months away from closing of polls, the Philippines’ Puerto Princesa bid is intensifying its call for support among citizens particularly the student youth, perceived as more engaged in SMS messaging than other age brackets, with a much improved national brand and at least a potential US$ 1 billion economic value over five years at stake.
An independent impact report released by Grant Thornton, an international organization of accountants and management consultants made the projection on South Africa, which is bidding for Table Mountain to be included in the New 7 Wonders of Nature.
It based its findings on the impacts on declared New 7 Wonders of the World sites. The list of man-made sites was announced in 2007.
Reporting on the impact on the country’s brand, Grant Thornton said that these declared sites have “become part of school curricula all over the world, and if the same happens to the New 7 Wonders of Nature, children from every corner of the globe will be learning about Table Mountain and South Africa as a destination”.
On the other hand, a study published by the Jeju Development Institute estimated that Korea’s Jeju Island could garner an economic value worth between US$ 895 million to US$ 1.837 billion a year if it becomes part of the list.
In June, President Benigno Aquino himself formed the Puerto Princesa Underground River New7Wonders of Nature Campaign Task Force headed by Interior Secretary Jesse M. Robredo to take the field of promoting the bid among Filipinos and OFWs.
The Swiss-based New 7 Wonders Foundation’s website only reveals trends in voting.
Recently, the Italian expedition group La Venta Associazione Culturale Esplorazioni Geografiche discovered the fossil of a 20 million-year-old fossil of a sea cow or, as popularly known in the Philippines, dugong.
